Day 2 · Vowels, Tone Marks & Thai Numerals

Let's learn about vowels, tone marks, and Thai numerals.

Besides consonants, Thai also has vowels that make a consonant into a complete-sounding word, like อา (ม + อา = มา "come") or อี (ด + อี = ดี "good"). Vowels can sit before, after, above, or below the consonant!

Thai has 4 tone-mark symbols that change how a word sounds — like ปา (mid tone), ป่า (low tone, "forest"), ป้า (falling tone, "aunt"), ป๊า (high tone, "dad"), ป๋า (rising tone). Different tone, different meaning!

Thai also has its own numerals: ๐ ๑ ๒ ๓ ๔ ๕ ๖ ๗ ๘ ๙, matching the numbers 0-9 you already know.

Activity: Try writing Thai numerals ๑ to ๕ in your notebook, then try saying ปา ป่า ป้า ป๊า ป๋า with different tones!
